We welcome returning families and families new to the school to helps us continue to strengthen our school community over the summer and next year. Here are some ideas on how we can connect and engage in our school community:
Engage/Connect through apps, email, and the web
- Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. School website: http://mlk.cpsd.us/
- This website has information on our school, a calendar of events, and emails so you know how to contact teachers and staff.
- Yana.com ("you are not alone" app)
This free "app" was developed by an MLKing parent to help connect families. On Yana.com, you can learn about what summer camps and out-of-school activities other parents recommend, and connect with others at the MLKing school. You can sign up here if you are a returning familiy and here if you are a few family. - MLK Community List serve
This opt-in parent-run list serve is a place for parents to share announcements with other parents. To join, send an email to mlkfriendsgroup [at] gmail [dot] com
- MLK Friends - this is us! :)
MLK Friends is our school' nonprofit parent group. We meet once a month, and support the school through fundraising and assisting with events. Volunteering with MLK Friends can fit any schedule! Parents can run for the MLK Friends board and attend every meeting, or participate in fewer meetings as part of a committee, or just volunteer occasionally at an event. If you want to join MLKFriends, send an email to mlkfriendsgroup [at] gmail [dot] com - Also, if you shop Amazon a lot, you can support MLK Friends through "Amazon Smile". There's a link directly to the right of this post -->
- Run for the MLK School Council
The School Council meets once a month and advises the Principal on school matters like curriculum and other school-related issues. To run, watch for the form in the fall - its another great way to be involved at the school.
- Attend events like our summer playdates
Each year, MLK Friends hosts several summer playdates for new and returning families at our school playground. Playdates offer a great way for parents and children to meet others at our school so we know people before the first day of school. This year's summer playdates are on these dates: - Sunday, August 6, 10am-12pm
- Thursday, August 17, 4:30-6:30pm
- Tuesday, September 6, 4-6pm
- We also can look forward to many other fun events you can look forward to next year like the Dr. Martin Luther King day concert and celebration, the Chinese New Year Celebration, Scholastic Book Fair, and many more events that MLK Friends helps our school organize and fund so we can strengthen our school community.
