Greetings all!

We had a wonderful week of celebration for Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr including volunteering at Cradles to Crayons, hearing the Harvard Kuumba singers, the local civil rights leaders and a fabulous concert by our own MLKing School students!

As you may know, I'm the President of MLK Friends. We support our school's core values, including family involvement/building community.

With that in mind, I wanted to share a few items of note for our school and in our wider community (I'll post this on mlkcommunity and yana.com - apologies if you receive it twice):

List with details below:
1. PAUS presents musical "The Emperors' New Clothes" Thu 1/25 + Fri 1/26 7pm

2. Family music show with MLKing parents + music teacher: Sat 2/3 2pm, Passim

3. MLKing student service project: Clothing Drive for Cradles to Crayons

4. Other upcoming service opportunities for our students

5. Next MLK Friends meeting: Wed. 2/7 8am- 1 week earlier than usual..  and other upcoming events.

Details:
1. PAUS presents musical "The Emperors New Clothes" Thu 1/25 + Fri 1/26 7pm
Support Putname Avenue Upper School (PAUS) our middle school - go see their performance of the musical "The Emperor's New Clothes" tonight, Thu 1/25 7pm or tomorrow Fri 1/26 7pm.

PAUS is our neighbor and MLK Friends is actively seeking ways we can connect with families in their community - one way is for us to support their shows, so please attend if you can. Tickets are $5.

2. Family music show with MLKing parents + music teacher: Sat 2/3 2pm, Passim
All are welcome to join us for a family concert at the legendary Passim in Harvard Square with bands featuring MLKing School parents Jasmine Moran and Christina Thompson Lively and our music teacher David Piper!

Gin Daisy plays bluegrass, swing and more, and Chris & Meredith Thompson perform folk/acoustic music.

Reserve seats here: https://www.passim.org/live-music/
Suggested donation is $10 per person, $20 per family, but we want anyone from our school to be able to attend, so its "give what you are able" (though the website says "free," we will accept donations at the show). A portion of the proceeds will support scholarships for MLKing School students to attend the MLKing Community School summer camp.

3. MLKing student service project: Clothing Drive for Cradles to Crayons
This year's service project for the 5th grade is a clothing drive for Cradles to Crayons! Bring gently used clothing (no rips or stains), shoes, and new-in-package socks, underwear and pyjamas to school so Cradles to Crayons can give them to children in need.

4. Other upcoming service opportunities for our students
MLK Friends will organize a team for the Charles River Cleanup and also for a school grounds cleanup to celebrate Earth Day - mark your calendars for these events on Saturday April 28.

5. Next MLK Friends meeting: Wed. 2/7 8am- 1 week earlier than usual
We welcome you all to attend the next MLK Friends meeting to learn more about the events above and the upcoming events below. Please note that we on Wed 2/7 - one week earlier than usual - this coming month.

Here are events we are working with the school to present/fund/organize:
  • Chinese New Year celebration Fri 2/9 8:15am: MLK Friends assists with funding and organization for that and funds the lion dance for students on Thu 2/8
  • Black history month African American inventor-themed scavenger hunt: A committee of parents lead by MLK Friends members has put together activities for children to learn about the many contributions of African American inventors as part of the library class at our school
  • Scholastic Book Fair: Fri 3/2 and literacy event for Read Across America: MLK Friends organizes the book fair and assists with organizing this event.
  • Community Conversations: Discussions on Diversity: Wed 3/7 5:30pm:
This event is sponsored by PAUS, but MLK friends members attended previous discussions and we encourage parents to attend this one on 3/7.
  • Earth Day Charles River Cleanup + School grounds cleanup: Sat 4/28
Celebrate Earth day through service to clean up our local riverbanks and our school grounds
  • Stay tuned for June when we will have Talent Show and Field Day - two great events where parents can volunteer with our school community
Also, check out the new novel that an MLKing parent wrote - its getting great reviews and I am enjoying reading it: Everything Here is Beautiful by Mira T. Lee.

Ok- that's long enough I think :)

Hope all are well and see you at school!
