Celebrating Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

On Friday January 15, 2016, our school celebrated its namesake: Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. We enjoyed a wonderful day of events!

In the morning students from each grade level sang songs from the civil rights movement as noted below. The fifth grade launched their service project: a food drive for a local food bank.

Many teachers and staff helped organize the morning event. MLK Friends provided support recruiting and organizing parent volunteers and funding the balloons and the birthday cake in honor of Dr. King. We also provided a nut-free gluten-free alternate cake. All students could eat a slice of one of the cakes*after* lunch.

In the evening, our school held another event for families. Our evening event included tours of the new school building by parent volunteers; stories and songs by local storyteller Valerie Stevens and a potluck dinner.  MLK Friends organized parent volunteers for the tours, event setup, potluck cleanup and also provided funding for the storyteller.

So many families attended for both these events, and everyone enjoyed connecting with other students and family members in our school community.

Thank you to all the teachers, staff, students, parent volunteers and attendees who made these events so successful!

We are grateful for a wonderful school community, and we look forward to seeing you at school.

Sincerely,
Friends of the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. School
